Wildlife
Common Merganser
Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) 22-27″ (56-69 cm). Male has flashing white sides, green head, white breast, and long, thin red bill. Female has gray body and sides; reddish-brown crested head sharply set off from white throat.
Ducks on a Pond
Took a detour on the way home a few weekends ago. Just off of Hwy 88 is Blue Lakes Road. I followed that road almost to the end and spotted these ducks on a pond. They were camera shy and got outta there as soon as I got close
Looking for Handouts
Another Yellow Bellied Marmot (Marmota flaviventris) looking for handouts from us. We’re not the type of hikers that feed the wildlife but I suspect that this guys got some treats later in the day when the trail got busier. At the summit, I think there were 3 or 4 of these guys.
Marmot Family
Day 3 – near Lake Aloha, a family of marmots came out to see who was hiking through their territory. Mom came out to warn us to leave her kids alone.
Too Lazy
Another shot from my trip down the coast last month. All this beautiful beach with the rocks in the surf. These young elephant seals seemed to be too lazy to enjoy their environment.
Beach Day
Just another day at the beach for these young elephant seals. These photos were taken at Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery.
A lil’ Sand In Your Face
These young seals kick sand on themselves to keep cool and relieve itching. And sometimes you get a lil’ in the face.
