Tahoe
Winter Weight
Recent snowstorms have the trees covered with snow. These trees looked like figures weighted down with heavy burdens.
Frozen
Just before the winter solstice, I was exploring along the western edge of South Lake Tahoe. In 2007 the Angora Ridge Fire destroyed 254 homes and burned 3100 acres. Today there are still reminders of the fire but in the devastation there is regrowth and beauty in the surrounding area. I found some cool icicles forming off burnt fallen logs along Angora Creek. A bit later down the road, Sawmill Pond was frozen with a close up shot revealing tiny air pockets trapped in the ice.
Freel Ridge Hike
One of the highest peaks in the Tahoe Basin is Freel Peak. At 10,886, the last mile to the summit can be challenging but the views along the trail are spectacular!
#15 Photograph Fireworks
This week I pulled #15 from the Lightbox Photography Cards set. “This is a tough challenge, but it doesn’t have to be a big show. Go out and get some sparklers, a tripod and a remote release and experiment till your heart’s content.” I pulled this card and thought, “where am I gonna get fireworks, it’s August?!? and ‘sparklers’ are definitely out of the question in bone-dry California.” Instead, I went with Nature’s Fireworks. It was the annual Perseid Meteor Showers and found my opportunity in the night sky last week.
A Walk In The Forest
I haven’t been out shooting this past month but it gives me the opportunity to revisit some of my past adventures from earlier this year. I enjoy a good walk in the forest. The trees and flora paint a pretty picture in colors and textures.
Osprey – Pandion haliaetus
I was backpacking and the resident osprey flew overhead. It was probably looking for it’s next meal.
Butterflies & Damselflies
While out an out about, I spotted theses little guys buzzing and fluttering around.
Backpacking
Heading out for another backpacking trip in the Tahoe Basin today. Here are some shots from last month’s trip around Tahoe 🙂 Stayed at Round Lake a couple of nights. It’s an easy hike that meanders through a large meadow and ends at an alpine lake. Beautiful sunrises, sunsets and so many stars that you fall asleep if you try to count them the all. All made better with great company. Got to get out more 🙂
Hike a Ridge-line
“April showers bring May flowers”. Showers in the high country mean snow and what better way to take in the views than a hike along the ridge-line.
